North route by 4WD and air

Yimrehanna Kristos church

This is a great itinerary that visits the very best of the northern historical circuit. Starting off from Addis Ababa, we drive to the North, enjoying the most spectacular scenery, all the way to Lalibela, with its amazing 12th c. rock-cut churches, and then travel to “African Camelot”, to see castles of Gondar. Then we visit the isolated island monasteries on Lake Tana, home to treasured religious artefacts and strong monastic traditions. Also included in this unusual tour is a visit to the Semien National Park, with its breathtaking views and Ras Dashen peak, the tallest mountain in Ethiopia. Here guests can see endemic gelada baboons and, if lucky, endemic and extremely rare Walia Ibex. The tour continues by driving to ancient Axum, and then to Gheralta, on the way  visiting an isolated monastery of Debre Damo (6th century). Rock-hewn churches of Gheralta, very rarely visited by tourists, should be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The tour ends in Mekele. Guests then fly to Addis Ababa. This 12-day tour gives a fantastic insight into the cultural heritage of this spectacular nation.
