The Danakil depression is one of the most inhospitable but beautiful regions in the world. As well as seeing the otherworldly colourful landscapes you can visit the world’s only permanent lava lake at Erta Ale, meet the Afar tribes and witness the incredible sight of the salt caravans.

The Danakil tour takes 4 days, 3 nights. It also includes flights Addis Ababa – Mekele – Addis Ababa. Price indicated on this page does not include hotels or air tickets, but upon your request we can arrange air tickets and hotel bookings in Addis Ababa and/or in Mekele.

Please note that this tour is the most extreme adventure tour in Ethiopia. Part of Danakil, named Dallol, is the hottest place on planet Earth, with daily temperatures reaching 60 degrees Celsius.

Sample itinerary of this tour is described below:

Day 1: Morning flight from Addis Ababa to Mekele. Meeting with driver/guide at the Mekele airport and drive to Danakil via Berhale. Overnight camping in Hamed Ella.

Day 2: Drive to Dodom, a village at the foot of Mount Erta Ale. Early dinner and after dark hike to the top of the volcano. Overnight camping near the crater of Erta Ale volcano.

Day 3: Return to the foot of Mount Erta Ale. Drive back to Hamed Ella. Excursion to the salt mines near the village.

Day 4: Early in the morning excursion to Dallol area. Drive back to Mekele. Return flight to Addis Ababa in the evening.
